Virtual Vanguard Discovery Camp June 8-11

Virtual VDC June 8-11 

We will offer the following courses during the week of June 8-11. Please register your camper for this week if they are interested in any, or all, of these offerings. The full schedule, including dates and times, will be emailed to you the week before camp. You will be able to login to each course you want to participate in throughout the week. 

Virtual Vanguard Discovery Camp will be conducted using the Zoom platform. You will need to have Zoom installed to participate. You will also need to have a computer. A microphone and camera are needed to participate in discussions or to share your work. You will also need to have access to a reliable internet connection. You would be able to participate using a cell phone or tablet with internet access as well using the Zoom app. Participant cameras and microphones will be disabled upon joining the session. Participants who enable their own camera or microphone will agree to being viewed by other participants, camp staff, and instructors. Recordings of the camp may be shared afterward. Pictures and clips may be shared for advertising purposes on social media and the ASUB webpage. 

Be sure to have paper and pencil ready for each camp to take notes and jot down questions as we go! Additional supplies may be needed if campers wish to follow along at home for some individual courses. Those lists will be emailed the week before camp. 

 

UNDERWATER BUGS IN OUR STREAMS – Time to feed the fish! In this course campers will learn how to capture and identify underwater macroinvertebrates (Bugs!) in our local streams and the procedures for tying flies to resemble them. This course introduces the insects found in local waters that are used by the fish for food. After learning how to identify the insects, you will learn about tying flies like the green caddis and wooly bugger, that resemble those insects to help you catch more fish! This course has been developed by the Stream Team division of the Foothills Chapter of the Arkansas Master Naturalists and is taught by Bob Verboon. 

FLY TYING – Join Marshall Dickey with the Arkansas Fly Fishers as they bring you this how-to class about fly tying and fly fishing. This class will be a more in-depth look at how flies are tied. The Wooly Bugger is the most popular in this area since it is the most common food for trout in local waters.  

RADIO BROADCASTING with 101.9 THE LAKE- KSUG – Tune in to hear Ali King and Billy Morgan with 101.9 The Lake! Ali will take you on a virtual tour of The Lake studios and talk to you about working in radio. Billy is the voice of the Harding Bisons and Heber Springs Panthers and will talk about play-by-play announcing and Sports Broadcasting. 

SOUNDS OF FROGS & TOADS – Hop on into this fun class and learn how to identify 23 Arkansas Frogs and Toads by the sounds they make.  This will be a two-day class.  This class is being taught by Mrs. Becky Pierce with the Arkansas Foothills Master Naturalists.  Identification cards will be scanned and uploaded so the kids can have to use during the class sessions.   

RAPTOR REHAB OF CENTRAL ARKANSAS - Kenley Money will present this session is an introduction to three of Arkansas's most populate birds of prey.  You will learn about their distinct hunting and flying adaptations, what they eat, where they live, and how they share the environment with man. Finally, you will be introduced to raptor rehabilitation and how we can help injured birds of prey.

INTRO TO VETRINARIAN SCIENCE - Get a sneak peek into the life of a local veterinarian and vet tech. Learn about the science of taking care of animals. This class will be “purrfect” for anyone interested in animals. It will be taught by Dr. Ryan Sartain. 

SOMETHING SMELLS FISHY – Instructors Bo Davidson and JJ Gladden from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will introduce campers to the world of fish. It will include fish identification, basic fish anatomy, and fish handling. It will also include a virtual fish dissection! 

OUTDOOR EDUCATION – Dive into this class featuring some very helpful information on getting outdoors in Arkansas. This class will cover safety and regulations related to Arkansas boating, hunting, and fishing. It is brought to you by Trent Whitehead, Corporal with the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission.  

INTRO TO METEOROLOGY– From tornadoes to hurricanes, to everyday natural phenomena's, it is easily said that weather is one of the most impacting things that humans deal with on a daily basis. This course will provide insight on the field of Meteorology (weather). Join Christopher Pipkin, graduate from Quitman High School, for a discussion and get a glimpse of a day in his life. He is now entering his senior year in college at Mississippi State, majoring in Professional/Broadcast Meteorology. He works at WVUA 23 News in Tuscaloosa, Alabama as a weekend meteorologist.  

INTRO TO 3D PRINTING – During this course you will learn the inner workings of 3D Printing. It includes modeling programs, how to 3D print, and the endless possibilities of 3D printing. This is a one-hour course that only requires internet access and creativity! Along the way, you will learn little ways you can help the world with 3D printing. It will be presented to you by Heber Springs High School students Cristina Welsh and Shawn Stone. 

MAKING ACCIDENTS DISAPPEAR: A SAFETY MAGIC SHOW - Scott Davis with First Electric presents this fun and educational magic show. He teaches kids all about behaving safely around electricity in an engaging and magical way. Sponsored by First Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, your energy partners. 

POLLINATORS - Join the Arkansas Monarch and Pollinator Coordinator to learn more about the magnificent monarch! Leslie Fowler will talk about monarch biology and their incredible migrations. Did you know monarchs have a brain the size of a sesame seed but complete a 3,000 mile journey to the same forests in Mexico every year? Tune in to learn more incredible facts and what you can do to help save the monarch! 

WILDFLOWER PRESS - Learn how to preserve wildflowers at home and on the trail. Use Apps to identify and learn more about each plant. This course is being taught by Erin Pierce from Organized Chaos Collection in North Little Rock. 

CREATE YOUR OWN TERRARIUM AT HOME - Use household items to create a micro-climate. This course will guide you through building a terrarium out of items you can find at home and in the great outdoors. This course is being taught by Erin Pierce from Organized Chaos Collection in North Little Rock.
