VDC Heber Springs Morning Series Session Descriptions

EYE IN THE SKY (DRONE SESSION)
This drone session for kids and teens  was specifically designed to open the door into both the present and the future. Fly away with Mitch as he educates students in Cleburne County on both the application and usefulness of drones. In this class, students will learn how to create and plot paths for drones. This is a one-of-a-kind summer camp  that will require hands-on-learning, adventure, and innovation.

AQUATIC SCIENCE 
In this session, campers will learn how to read topographic maps of lakes, explore the unique ecology of the area and natural spaces, as well as participate in hands-on interactive sessions that will focus on distinct types of fishing gear and equipment used to catch fish.

WATER WORKS
In this session, campers will take a trip to the Greers Ferry Dam and visit the William Carl Garner Visitor Center to learn about the creation of the dam and the science behind it, including the relationship and use of water in the production of hydroelectricity. The session will conclude with a hike through the local trails.

STREAM TEAM BIOLOGIST
This course will cover many of the state’s reptile and amphibian species tying their habitat needs and conservation to water quality and the overall importance of river/stream habitat to the Natural State ecosystem and its stakeholders. Stephen O’Neal is the Arkansas Game & Fish Stream Team Coordinator.

A SPARK OF INTEREST - FIRST ELECTRIC SAFETY TRAILER DEMONSTRATION
Representatives from First Electric present this fun and educational session that teaches campers how to behave safely around electricity in an engaging and fun manner. This session is sponsored by First Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, your energy partners.

INTRO TO METEOROLOGY
From tornadoes to hurricanes, to everyday natural phenomena, it is easily said that weather is one of the most impacting things that humans deal with daily. This course will provide insight into the field of Meteorology (weather).

VANGUARD CHEF PART I
Walk the grocery store aisles with Chancellor Methvin! Grocery shopping can be intimidating and overwhelming, but it does not have to be! Let Chancellor Methvin take the stress away by walking you through making the best food choices, showing you how to read labels, introducing new ingredients, picking out healthy on-the-go options, answering your questions and providing grocery shopping and meal planning tips. Learn healthy grocery store shopping basics with our one and only ASU-Beebe Chancellor!

THE SOUND OF SCIENCE
Do you like music AND want to learn about science? This interactive session uses Mr. Parr’s Science Song videos focusing on the heart, the circulatory system, and various other organ systems to bridge the gap between music and science (STEAM). Campers will also work as a team to write their own lyrics to set to music.

VANGUARD CHEF PART II
ASU-Beebe's Chancellor, Dr. Jennifer Methvin, demonstrates her culinary skills in the kitchen utilizing a variety of STEAM-related skills and highlighting the fact that cooking is as much math and science as it is art. In this session, Dr. Methvin will demonstrate how science can transform common ingredients into a delicious feast.
