Virtual VDC June 14-18

We will offer the following courses during the week of June 14-18. Please register your camper for this week if they are interested in any, or all, of these offerings. The full schedule, including dates and times, will be emailed to you the week before camp. You will be able to login to each course you want to participate in throughout the week. 

Virtual Vanguard Discovery Camp will be conducted using the Zoom platform. You will need to have Zoom installed to participate. You will also need to have a computer. A microphone and camera are needed to participate in discussions or to share your work. You will also need to have access to a reliable internet connection. You would be able to participate using a cell phone or tablet with internet access as well using the Zoom app. Participant cameras and microphones will be disabled upon joining the session. Participants who enable their own camera or microphone will agree to being viewed by other participants, camp staff, and instructors. Recordings of the camp may be shared afterward. Pictures and clips may be shared for advertising purposes on social media and the ASUB webpage. 

Be sure to have paper and pencil ready for each camp to take notes and jot down questions as we go! Additional supplies may be needed if campers wish to follow along at home for some individual courses. Those lists will be emailed the week before camp. 

DESCRIPTIONS

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DIESEL TECHNICIAN
Want to learn more about what a Diesel Technician does? Join our very own Jake Selvidge as he walks you through the process using a video game. In this session, Jake will show you how to use the app and simulators in his shop, demonstrating a day in the life of a Diesel Technician.
June 15th - 1:00 p.m. 

BAKING WITH BAILEY
ASU-Beebe Student Government Association President Bailey Pendergrass shows us how to bake/cook in the microwave.  A simple recipe and a few ingredients turn a mug and the microwave into the perfect baking tools. A quick, safe, and fun way to make a sweet treat without using the stove/oven.

BECOMING A VANGUARD CHEF
ASU-Beebe's Chancellor, Dr. Jennifer Methvin, demonstrates her culinary skills in the kitchen utilizing a variety of STEAM related skills and highlighting the fact that cooking is as much math and science as it is art. Dr. Methvin will demonstrate how science can transform common ingredients into a yummy feast in four fun sessions: The Physical Science of Making Butter, The Chemistry of Cornbread, Cream of Carrot Soup - From Chemistry instead of a Can, and A Fresh and Artful Dessert.

MAKING ACCIDENTS DISAPPEAR: A SAFETY MAGIC SHOW
Scott Davis with First Electric presents this fun and educational magic show. He teaches kids all about behaving safely around electricity in an engaging and magical way. Sponsored by First Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, your energy partners.

MARSH MADNESS
Join ASU-Beebe's Dean of Math and Science, Dr. Thomas Smith, as he explores swamp “critters” and describes the key role they play in the ecosystem. Dr. Smith will also discuss the distinct types of animals found in these crucial habitats.

POP ART CULTURE
If you love pop-up books this workshop will explore ways to cut and fold paper into sculptures that literally pop-up and jump off the page. Use what you learn to incorporate it into cards, sculpted paper hats, or other mixed media art that literally jump off the page! This course is taught by ASU-Beebe art instructor Lisa Floryshak.
June 16th - 2:00 p.m. 

RAPTOR REHAB OF CENTRAL ARKANSAS
Kenley Money will present this session is an introduction to three of Arkansas's most populate birds of prey.  You will learn about their distinct hunting and flying adaptations, what they eat, where they live, and how they share the environment with man. Finally, you will be introduced to raptor rehabilitation and how we can help injured birds of prey.
June 14 - 11:00 a.m. 

SOUNDS OF FROGS & TOADS
Hop on into this fun class and learn how to identify 23 Arkansas Frogs and Toads by the sounds they make.  This will be a two-day class.  This class is being taught by Mrs. Becky Pierce with the Arkansas Foothills Master Naturalists.  Identification cards will be scanned and uploaded so the kids can have to use during the class sessions.

STREAM TEAM BIOLOGIST
This course will cover many of the state’s reptile and amphibian species tying their habitat needs and conservation to water quality and the overall importance of river/stream habitat to the Natural State ecosystem and its stakeholders. Stephen O’Neal is the Arkansas Game & Fish Stream Team Coordinator.

THINGS BEES MAKE I
Bee products include more than just honey! How many can you think of? When people think “what do bees make,” most would say honey, but it does not stop there. In fact, bees produce and collect many different elements that are the fruits of their labor. We will look at the many bee products and byproducts made from bees, including the following: honey, nectar, beeswax, pollen, bee bread, propolis, royal jelly, bee venom, and beehive air.
June 14th - 10:00 a.m. 

THINGS BEES MAKE II
This course is a continuation of Things Bees Make and will consist of fun projects made using bee products and byproducts discussed in the previous course. Some projects include making lip balm, various honey-based products, and other fun, useful items.
